This was my first visit to the Birmingham balti triangle in some 20 years. We chose Imrans because we were on our monthly Friday night drinking session and decided to put a lining on our stomachs before alcohol abuse commenced, and this I was told by a drinking buddy was one of the best in the area.
The last time I was in Sparkbrook, restaurants here had glass tables with menus underneath. Times have changed and this, along with many other restaurants in the balti belt I suspect, have been updated, modernised and made into contemporary bistro type curry houses…
Clean, modern stone brick and shiny metal…no ‘transport cafe’ style balti houses here any more…kind of miss those days, can you tell?
My drinking buddies all enjoyed their starters and meals, I recollect they ordered tandoori fish and lamb chop starters, which all came on sizzling skillets. I had sheek kebab, which was OK -whether ‘the best in town’ as the menu reported I cannot say -need to try some more…I chose sizzling Chicken tikka and a roti for main, but it was so minimalistic.
Neither starter or main came with any accompanying salad and no further mint sauce was offered. Also, the portion sizes were a little on the small size I felt – we paid around £12 a head and I could have happily have eaten another portion of my main course again.
The quality of the food was very good though,my chicken had a lovely char barbecue flavour and served sizzling with onions….it just needed the accompaniments I usually expect..
My mates all seemed pretty happy, and there is a traditional sweet shop next door where pudding was purchased!
Overall, I think its OK to good -but I was expecting a bit more from my first visit in a while to the home of the Balti.
