We were originally heading around the corner to a local carvery, but as it was completely packed to the rafters decided to give Kaben? a go instead.

It was an inspired move as Kaben? delivered on taste and quality at a reasonable price.

Kaben? is located off Quarry Bank high street near the busy Merry Hill Centre in the Black Country. Like many curry houses around here, this used to be a public house -the old Blue Ball which I used to frequent on many a pub crawl in my younger days.

My wife chose stuffed mushrooms which looked terrific, and tasted as good as they looked. Breadcrumbed, stuffed with meat and crunchy…lovely. My Sheek Kebabs were fragrantly spiced with a nice heat on the tongue.

I followed with the Chicken Tikka Tawa. A sizzling tomato based curry with plenty of onions. Very tasty.

Kaben? is very worthy of a visit if in the area, and apparently is the Stourbridge News newspapers local curry house of the year. After my visit I can see why it has achieved this accolade.

A review from ghostmoon

I dined here with a group of 8 the other night. I should say that the service was very good – they’re clearly used to dealing with large groups, and they looked after us very well indeed. Orders were taken promptly without rushing us, and the food arrived without us needing to wait long – good considering the place was packed.

On to the food, then: my starter (prawn on puree) was very good indeed. The sauce was delicious and the bread wonderfully crisp. I recall thinking that if my main was as good, I’d be very happy indeed.

Unfortunately, the main wasn’t as good. I’d ordered chicken makhani. Now, while I don’t claim to be an expert on Indian cuisine, every other time I’ve had a makhani it’s been creamy, slightly sweet and buttery, perhaps with a slight tang or hint of tomato. This makhani was blood-red in colour and resembled the standard dubious-quality chicken tikka masalla in both appearance and flavour. It was still perfectly palatable, but not what I was anticipating when I ordered, and this was somewhat off-putting. Rice, nan and chips were all very good, though.

All in all, despite the niggle with the main course, we still had an excellent time and a very nice meal – but it is rather a big deal when what you get is nothing like what you think you’re ordering (and not much like the description on the menu, either).

Still, worth a visit!!
